What are the goals of the Research SIG?

The group is concerned with promoting and supporting research in English language teaching. Key questions for us relate to:

  • The nature of research in ELT - What counts as research? What broad approaches to research are available to us?
  • The processes of doing research - How do we design a research project? What research methods are available to us?
  • The processes of disseminating research - What options are available to us for sharing our work? How can we prepare effective oral presentations of research? How do we go about preparing written accounts of research?
  • Evaluating research - What different ways are there of judging the value of research?
  • The role and relevance of research in the lives of ELT professionals - What role does research (others' and our own) play in the lives of ELT teachers and teacher educators?

We address these goals through our events, publications and discussion list.
